Selling is a craft. It’s a performance. It’s also a bit of a mystery. Why is it that two salespeople who work for the same manager have different results? Both salespeople sell the same thing, to similar clients, at the same price. If one salesperson complains about an underhanded competitor, another salesperson has little trouble dispatching that same competitor. Let’s agree to call this “the variability of individual results.”

Closing is perhaps the easiest commitment to acquire. But for this to be true, you need to gain a number of commitments. In 2016, after publishing The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need, I had already started writing The Lost Art of Closing: Winning the 10 Commitments That Drive Sales on my flight from a meeting with the publisher in New York.

Q5: The Quietest Weeks on the Local Media Calendar—and the Smartest Time to Build Q1 Momentum
Q5—late December through mid- to late January—is a rare local advertising window when many advertisers go dark but consumers keep scrolling, spending gift cards, and shopping for “reset” purchases. With less competition, local brands can often generate calls, appointments, and qualified leads more efficiently, especially in categories tied to renewal, home upgrades, auto service, and wellness. The winners pair seasonally reframed creative (“self-gift” and “new year, new you”) with fast follow-up systems—speed-to-lead, automation, and basic measurement like call tracking and booking links. For local media and agencies, the best play is to treat Q5 as a bridge into Q1: run a focused offer, optimize quickly, and use early proof to convert a January test into a 90-day or annual commitment.
TV and the Competition
Most media have recovered as well as could be expected since the start of the pandemic, despite significant losses of ad spending and shifts in people’s media use. TV was able to benefit from its ubiquitous position, as viewers, including young adults, planted themselves in front of their TVs for news and entertainment to fill their additional time at home. Eventually, digital media benefited significantly (and still is), as well as many retailers from
10 Ways to Avoid Being a Dull Salesperson and Engage Your Clients Effectively
Too many sales reps are dull in their sales conversation. You can blame this on onboarding processes that gaslight reps into believing that their company and solution are the most important things. This establishes parity with competitors, meaning one salesperson is no better than another. Instead of being average and turning yourself into a commodity, aim to be a more dynamic, engaging salesperson.

3 Big Moments That Can Define Your Leadership Career
We work for decades, yet for most of us, there are a handful of moments in time that define the course of our leadership career. Unfortunately, these moments — opportunities or crises — don’t come with a caption suggesting, “Hey, pay attention and embrace this mess because it’s going to turn out to be important to you.” For individuals who choose to lead, it pays to see the signposts. Here are three significant moments in the career of everyone who leads that merit your complete engagement.
AI Disclaimers Are Creating a New Trust Problem for Political Advertising
A new study from the American Association of Political Consultants Foundation suggests that AI disclaimers on political ads may be reducing voter trust rather than improving transparency. For local media sellers and ad agencies, the lesson is clear: political advertisers will need more than legal compliance—they will need credible media environments, careful creative execution and voter-sensitive messaging. Radio, TV, cable, print, outdoor and digital platforms can strengthen their value in political campaigns by helping candidates communicate clearly, disclose responsibly and avoid turning transparency into suspicion.
Sara Blakely: The Art of the Unseen Revolution
Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, transformed a personal frustration with pantyhose into a billion-dollar brand by blending grit, humor, and outsider thinking. With no background in fashion or business, she taught herself patent law, pitched her product door-to-door, and earned Oprah’s endorsement, launching Spanx into national fame. Her success is rooted in empathy, authenticity, and a growth mindset that embraces failure as fuel. Blakely’s marketing strategy relied on storytelling over ad spend, and her leadership style fosters vulnerability, purpose, and resilience. Beyond business, she’s a philanthropist, adventurer, and prank-loving mom who believes joy and discomfort are both essential to growth.
